From Beanbags to Brainwaves:  Sensory Integration Utilizing Bal-A-Vis-X, Neurofeedback and The Listening Program®

In this presentation, Joseph Cordes will share how his clinic has been incorporating a mix of manual therapy, neurofeedback, Bal-A-Vis-X, and The Listening Program (TLP) for what he calls “integrated sensory-motor learning”. Joe will explain and show how using EEG biofeedback readings and other measures, and how he has been able to assist many clients into greater levels of function, by what Bal-A-Vis-X, using beanbags and racquetballs in toss/catch or bounce/catch combinations, can add in the way of rhythmic training and multi-sensory challenge of eyes, ears, and balance.

Joseph Cordes, PT, GCFP is a physical therapist with 25 years of experience in utilizing osteopathic and other holistic manual therapy techniques, as well as 10 years of experience as a Feldenkrais Movement Educator, and 4+ years of experience certified in neurofeedback and as a provider of TLP. In more recent years, he has been adding in Bal-A-Vis-X training at his private clinic, for a multimodal approach to sensory-motor integration. Joe’s use of neurofeedback pre- and post- readings on client’s EEG patterns, is one way he assesses the effects of not only manual techniques, but also the effects of the TLP CD’s and Bal-A-Vis-X routines.

Joe is an experienced and sought-after manual therapy instructor and averages eight courses per year in various manual therapy techniques. He has worked extensively with hospitals and clinics in Grand Rapids, MI, and in the Midwest. He started the Manual Therapy Program utilized at St. Mary’s Hospital’s “Institute for Mind, Body, & Spirit”, where he assisted and consulted on clients for six years. He provides consultations and advises on treatment programs for West Michigan head injury and other multiple trauma clients. He also regularly sees pediatric and infant clients who need craniosacral therapy and movement re-education, along with many clients coming for TLP and NF sessions in his clinic. He is currently involved in a three year ongoing Integrated Manual Therapy training and mentoring of PT’s and OT’s at MaryFreeBed Rehabilitation Hospital. Joe’s teaching emphasizes how therapists need to be more integrated, and provide clients with home programs that address visual, auditory, vestibular, and movement re-education needs.
